I’m the Guy
…who was dancing with you…while you were smiling, had your eyes closed, and it made me happy too…

Goodbye, Kate Wolf
In honor of the late Northern California folksinger, who died of leukemia in her early forties, in 1986. I heard her play live just once, at a small outdoor concert in the Marin headlands; and also heard her on KPFA radio, one Sunday afternoon, playing favorite records by others, trading sides with her adult son, where they had a wonderful on-air mother-son relationship.

She Says They’re Stretch Marks
A love song, written for my now ex-wife, inspired by a black and white photograph of sea grass on the beach I saw once on a postcard – as well as – well, you know…

Deja Vu in Paradise
Once upon a time, she’d been my conga teacher, and I always found her lots of fun. That was then. A couple of years later, on a whim, I called her up with a conga question and it turned out she was living in Venice (CA). Luckily, her number was forwarded, and we had a lovely chat and lots of laughs on the phone — so much so, that I called her back the following week just to chat. More laughs, more calls, and eventually, a visit to L.A. ensued. A romantic dinner at a restaurant – which we had to ourselves, as it happened to be the night of the Oscars®, (and somehow it seemed that everyone in Los Angeles had somewhere else to be); then, a sunset walk along the beach. We had a lot of fun together, though in the end, over time, disagreed about virtually everything. But we’ll always have Venice – and now, this song!

Starfish Whisper
She was one of the most beautiful women I’d ever seen. I’d admired her from afar on previous occasions, but we’d never spoken. One night, I saw her standing alone at a dance and, in an experimental burst of confidence, rustled up my courage and, without a thought in my head about what I might say next, walked up to her and said, “Hi!” She gave me an enthusiastic “Hi!” back, and we were off…for awhile. A few weeks later, this song.

Things I Have to Tell You
I met her at a party and eventually, with images
from my midwest childhood in mind, wrote her this song.

Wild Cajun Woman
I met her at a zydeco party we had one night at my dance studio. We were having fun, but I told her I was late for a prior engagement and had to leave. She told me to tell the person I was meeting that I’d been delayed by “a wild Cajun woman.” And sure enough I was – that night, and for a number of days and nights thereafter.
